CONCEPTUAL PLAN

The $27.45 million project scope approved by the Union CSD Board of Education includes improvements at all of the district’s campuses.

Dysart-Geneseo Elementary School and La Porte City Elementary School

  • Replacement of the fire alarm system

  • Preventative maintenance for the mechanical systems

Union Middle School

  • Roof improvements and replacements

  • Renovation of the public restrooms

  • Installation of air conditioning in the gymnasium

Part of the bond funds would go towards state-of-the art safety and security systems. Specifically, the district is first considering Centegix, a mass emergency notification system.

Centegix was recently used during the horrific school shooting in Georgia, and law enforcement there have said the system prevented additional injuries and loss of life. Union CSD would be the first district in Iowa to implement this system, pending the outcome of the bond vote on November 5.

In addition to Centegix, the district is also in discussions with ZeroEyes, which utilizes artificial intelligence and existing security cameras to detect weapons — both inside and outside of buildings. Union would be one of only a handful of districts in Iowa to have this technology.

Union CSD would become a leader in the state of Iowa through the use of these safety systems.

Union High School

  • Replacement of the HVAC systems to improve air quality, comfort, and dehumidification

  • Replacement of the steam boilers are approximately 20 and 40 years beyond their life expectancy

  • Renovation of the science rooms

  • Renovation of the family and consumer science room

  • Relocation and renovation of the library, kitchen, and commons

  • Renovation of the public restrooms

  • Construction of an auxiliary/community gymnasium and secondary locker rooms

With all of the great athletics and other extracurricular activities we have at Union, gymnasium space and scheduling continues to be a major challenge. Having auxiliary gymnasium space will alleviate scheduling conflicts for various sports practices, allow Union CSD to host more competitions, and provide our community with another space to use for events.

Creating two new locker rooms for Union CSD teams will allow visiting teams to utilize our existing locker rooms. Visiting teams do not currently have designated locker room space and instead are asked to change in classrooms.
